Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole with Stuffing
Budget friendly at $2.50 a serving. Enjoy this make ahead Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole with Stuffing that incorporates a wonderful Maple Glaze Honey Ham topped with an Herb Seasoned Bread Dressing! The flavors blend together making it hard to put down the fork! And if your preference is low-carb, just eliminate the dressing! I fell in love with Chicken Cordon Bleu with its beautiful presentation and creamy sauce at a high-end restaurant. Unfortunately I do not always have the time to make it proper.
This creamy Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is a wonderful alternative that you can enjoy in under an hours time. The best part is you bake a casserole for tonight’s dinner and freeze one for later! We include step by step instructions on how to make this easy comfort food. This recipe makes two casseroles. If freezing both casseroles it takes about 20-minutes to assemble. You bake when ready to serve. Consider this recipe to stock up your freezer with make ahead meals!

What is Chicken Cordon Bleu?
Chicken Cordon Bleu is a beautiful dish of a rolled and breaded Chicken with a delicious sauce! It consists of a piece of Chicken pounded thin wrapped around a thin slice of Smoked Ham, Swiss Cheese, and then breaded. It can be pan-fried, baked or deep-fried for a nice crunchy breading. A wonderful sauce compliments this dish with heavy cream or white wine. One cut into a Chicken Cordon Bleu reveals the different layers of ingredients with cheese oozing out surrounded by a creamy sauce. The below picture is courtesy of Betty Crocker. They have a traditional Chicken Cordon Bleu recipe. Doesn’t it look fabulous!

Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole
The casserole version considers the layering technique of Chicken Cordon Bleu by selecting complementary ingredients. Be sure to obtain the best ingredients and you will be rewarded with a ton of flavor! The below picture shows the layers once the casserole has been cooked and chilled in the refrigerator. Once heated, it resembles the traditional Chicken Cordon Bleu in its rolled and breaded state.
Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Recipe
Begin with the Herb Seasoned Bread Dressing on the stovetop. Select a version of dressing or stuffing that you enjoy. Once cooked, let the dressing cool making it easier to spread on the casseroles. While the dressing is cooking start the cream sauce. Add the Cream of Chicken Soup into a bowl and whisk until smooth. Slowly add the Milk, whisking until smooth. Once it is incorporated whisk in the Smoked Paprika and Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese providing a rich flavor to the cream sauce. Mixing the cream sauce in a large measuring cup is helpful when dividing the sauce across the two casseroles.

Spray two 9×12 casserole dishes with non-stick spray. In order to mimic a gourmet Chicken Cordon Bleu, start with placing the chicken in the casserole dishes covering the bottom. Next layer the Maple Glaze Honey Ham on top of the chicken. It is important to select a good quality ham that will introduce additional flavor to the casserole. My preference is a wafer thin sliced ham from both a flavor perspective and to make it easier to eat. I like to chop it into bite size pieces for easier serving. Top with Shredded Swiss Cheese to evenly melt or you could use Sliced Swiss Cheese.
Add the cream sauce evenly over both casseroles. If you find there are small sections of the casserole without sauce, add a little milk to your bowl picking up any remaining sauce to then cover those areas. Spread the cooked Herb Bread Dressing across both casseroles and add the additional toppings. I add dried Basil since it has a nice bright flavor, dried Chives provides a touch of onion and the Cheddar Cheese brings in an ingredient from the Cream Sauce. The flavors all blend together providing a delicious meal!
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 30-minutes or until heated through. The resulting casserole is similar to the rolled version of Chicken Cordon Bleu with its layers, creamy sauce, and bread dressing toasted to a crunch! An absolutely delicious meal that is super easy to make!
Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole with Stuffing
Enjoy your Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole! It is fork tender with all the yummy ingredients melted together. The Herb Dressing adds a wonderful layer of flavor!
Freezer Meals
Do not bake the casseroles that you wish to freeze. After the casseroles are assembled, cover with heavy aluminum foil and freeze. When ready to enjoy, partially thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Preheat oven to 375 or 400°. Bake, covered, until heated through and a thermometer inserted in the center reads 165°, about 30 to 45 minutes. If desired, uncover and bake until cheese is melted. The total bake time depends upon the frozen state of the casserole and the oven temperature.
Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Ritz Cracker Topping
We love Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole with a herb dressing. However, there are other options that are also delicious. Ritz Crackers is an option to replace the breading. Use two sleeves of Ritz crackers and 4 to 6 tablespoons of melted butter. Place Ritz Crackers in a food processor until finely chopped. Slowly add the melted butter until desired consistency. Divide the topping across the two casseroles.
Budget Friendly Meal
Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is a budget friendly meal. With a little planning, you can purchase some of the ingredients on sale to keep your pantry ready to make this make ahead meal. When ready to make the meal, just purchase the perishables and assemble your casseroles. On average a serving costs us $2.50. Your average cost could be different depending upon price of ingredients in your area.
